Water and sanitary sewer excess capacities are available throughout the area. There are four electric service providers and natural gas is also available. The primary vehicular transportation corridor serving Burke County is Interstate 40, however I-85, I-77 and I-26 are within a 50 mile radius.
Burke County has about 514 square miles, or 329,469 acres. The largest landowners in Burke County, are the US Government, Crescent Resources (Duke Energy Co.), and the State of North Carolina. The County has the third largest concentration of state employment in the state through the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Department of Correction, School for the Deaf, Western Carolina Center, and Broughton Hospital. Burke County has been referred to as the "Western State Capital."
